Assignment #1 is a “culling ” assignment, meaning that you should selectively gather images and information from a variety of sources both physical and mental to explore your interest in a certain theme or subject to produce an informed and unique method for your final display. This idea of selective gathering should be around a theme that you want to focus on exploring through photography and communicate through photography. Choose an idea you are interested in examining and then approach it from many different angles to pinpoint your main interest and help decide how you want to present it to your audience.
Physical culling could be in the form of shooting film and scanning it, shooting digitally, using material from books, magazines, journals, found images, found objects, organic objects (shells, leaves, bark, etc…). These could be in their original form or scanned on the flatbed scanners. Or any other sources that can be thought of. Mental culling could include pulling from memories, histories or invented histories, mythologies, fantasies, sciences or pseudosciences, evidence real or invented. you research can be based in factual information as much as you want or can be complete invented.
The final presentation could take several forms such as a series of digital or analog prints, book, collage, projection, installation or anything else that fits your vision. This may seem like a big task but have fun with it. The final presentation doesn’t have to be perfect but should communicate your culled idea and to your audience. this assignment comes at the beginning of the semester so you can further build on the ideas that you have explored and are really interested in.
